Also referred to as collagen-induction therapy, microneedling is an aesthetic treatment that supports your skin’s revitalizing powers. Aesthetic expert Laura Moncada, FNP-C, at Copper Valley Primary Care in Tucson, Arizona, offers microneedling with and without platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to reduce the appearance of your fine lines and wrinkles, as well as diminish the appearance of acne scars. Microneedling is a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment that uses a special device equipped with thin, tiny needles that create tiny punctures in the surface layer of your skin.
These punctures simulate an injury, which triggers your skin’s revitalizing process and increases the production of collagen and elastin.
Collagen and elastin are the proteins in your skin responsible for its youthful strength and resilience. By initiating the production of these proteins, microneedling creates firmer, smoother, and more even-toned skin.
At Copper Valley Primary Care, Ms. Moncada may recommend microneedling as an aesthetic treatment for your:
Though microneedling is most often used to treat the face, Ms. Moncada can use the skin revitalizing tool to treat any part of your body and may suggest it as a solution for your stretch marks.
PRP is a form of regenerative medicine that contains a high concentration of the healing properties naturally found in your blood, including platelets, growth factors, and specialized cells. These properties are responsible for cell and tissue revitalization during the wound healing process.
When applied to your skin with microneedling, PRP accelerates the healing process and may improve the overall rejuvenating results of your treatment.
Ms. Moncada performs your microneedling at the office. Before she begins your treatment, she may first apply a topical anesthetic to reduce your discomfort during your cosmetic treatment. She then cleans your skin with an antibacterial agent and begins the microneedling process.
The entire procedure takes less than an hour. You may experience some redness after your session, but these side effects should subside within a few days following your treatment. There’s no need for downtime following your session.
Microneedling with PRP requires a couple more steps during your aesthetic treatment. To create the PRP, Ms. Moncada takes a sample of blood from your arm and spins it in a centrifuge to separate the healing properties from the other components in your blood.
You can expect the topical numbing agent and skin cleaning as with microneedling without PRP. However, before she starts your microneedling, Ms. Moncada applies the PRP to your skin.
Then, she uses the microneedling device to drive the healing properties directly into the skin to accelerate the healing process.
Ms. Moncada can discuss the benefits of adding PRP to your microneedling treatment and help decide if it’s something you’d like to include with your cosmetic treatment.
